ode to the Murphy building. St. Loiis and our accross the river city East St. Louis are full of 200 plus year old buildings that are gilded with fine art architectual elements. Once a city of Mansions and high rise wonders there came a time when the wealthy families of St Louis decided they wanted to move to the west, outside of the busy city and it's industry pollution. For many years opportunist came and stripped many building of their lovely architecture and tons of brick to sell off. After 20 years of allowing our history to be stolen the people formed a preservation society and began saving our history. The Murphy building is on the historic registry but has not had a champion step up to restore it after years of neglect. It is now beyond repair. East St. Louis was hit hard with the westward movement and became a very down trodden area that no one would invest in it. Thus this wonderful piece of history slowly falls to the Earth. This photo was taken by my friend Robert Frank and given to me with full permissions. On a brighter note many wonderful old buildings have been saved, and thanks to the preservation society, restored to their old glory by modernizing them without destroying their historical beauty.
