Henri loved cushions! fabric by moirarae on Spoonflower - custom fabric

More about this preview. Help_icon

Inspired by the things he was inspired by... African, Japanese/Chinese fabrics and art... with a few twists! The colours reminded me of Japanese Edo period bath robes - these were often decorated using a starch resist made, from rice, dipped in indigo and then stencilled to add colours such as red, pink and gold. I adapted the grouped swirls from a favourite design of the Blue H'mong of Laos know as 'grouped snails'. The circles of basket weave are symbolic of silk worm feeding baskets used in Japan. The narrow border is based on a Chinese knife wax resist from Guizhou.

Henri loved cushions!

Six fronts, or three fronts & three backs, to a yard of cotton sateen - to co-ordinate with the border/stripe 'Henri would have loved it!' and the repeat 'Henri would have loved it, loved it, loved it!'.
