Hercules! A tribute to the Lockheed C-130 Hercules.

A magnificent beast, workhorse of the skies. I've been in love with the aptly named Hercules ever since one first landed in the small town where I grew up, on a humanitarian mission after severe flooding cut off road transport. Would the runway be long enough? Strong enough? Once it had landed, would it ever be able to take off again?

Although I didn't know it then, a feature of the Hercules is that they can use "unprepared runways for takeoffs and landings" (according to Wikipedia). Over 40 models serve with more than 60 nations.

Chalk sun, half-drop repeat.

su_g says: Yes, this is the one that was made into a party shirt - the back and the arms in this pattern while the front was a normal white shirt. It must really be something to see a whole room of guys wearing these - in the pics I saw they were all wearing tuxes too I think.

wren_leyland says: Su, is this the design someone made into a military party shirt? Great idea!

su_g says: Thanks so much Karen and son! Too true how many great planes there are in the world (and the Mustang is certainly on many lists, just for example), but the Hercules is still one of the greatest!

serenity_ii says: This is awesome. I want to show it to my son, but as soon as I do, he'll say, "Is there a Blackbird? A Mustang? A B-29? Can we get it?" and won't have anything he needs in mind to make with it. ; )

su_g says: Thanks Lisa! Not that awesome a design but sure is an awesome transporter - still gives me a thrill when I see them now and then.

su_g says: 'Hercules!': in a bespoke apron made by Domestic Divaz - and many thanks for sharing the picture! This was a special order BBQ apron made for someone in the US Air Force, and I am thrilled to see it! Domestic Divaz makes bespoke BBQ, Divaz, Kidz and Craft aprons as well as baby items. Both her Facebook page and Etsy shop have really neat stuff - see DomesticDivaz at Etsy: and at Facebook:

su_g says: Proofing swatch (8" x 8") printed on basic combed cotton (daylight photo). The blue is a beautiful deep blue - like a desert sky.

su_g says: Thanks so much Rhonda, I always love to read your comments and wonderful feedback. I just got the proof of this back which shows me that it needs more work (alas) - ah well, back to the drawing board (literally!). It's the comments from other designers that convince me to keep working on it, just so helpful.

rhondadesigns says: The bold colours of the blazing sun and the clear blue sky highlight the silhouetted Hercules planes and enhance the powerful imagery of your design, Su! It was interesting to read your personal anecdote about how one of these "Missions of Mercy" by a Hercules can bring much-needed assistance to isolated communities in times of crisis.

su_g says: I'm so glad that some of the Hercules' power comes through in this design - thank you Deborah for that feedback!

su_g says: Thanks for the comments on this one Robyn and Patricia. Re forest fires I'm not sure that is Hercules' business - I've only seen helicopters (there's a famous one here - that came from the US - known as 'Elvis') that suck up fire-fighting water from long hoses they drop into dams & other water sources... Glad you like that 'polka dot' sun tho'!

pd_frasure says: It reminds me of the way the sun turns red in the sky during a forest fire, they must help there too? This is a polka dot of magnificence! Movement, meaning, depth of more than one kind.
