Ruby is a pink to blood-red colored gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum ( aluminium oxide). The red color is caused mainly by the presence of the element chromium. One of Natures Beautiful Creations is created in Burma (Myanmar) Corundum has been found in a number of different areas of Burma. These include Sagyin, Thabeitkyin, Naniazeik, Mogok, and most recently Mong Hsu.
Most famous is the Mogok Stones Tract, which has remained the worlds premier source of ruby for more than 800 years. The 196-ct Hixon Ruby is one of finest Burmese ruby crystals on public display in Los Angeles Museum of Natural History. In 2008 the Tom Lantos Block Burmese Jade Act was designed and approved to punish Burma's brutal ruling regime by banning the importation of "blood stones" rubies and jade from there into the United States. I purchased these stones in 2007 for myself because of their beauty before I became aware of the conflict and just like blood diamonds I'm pleased to see sanctions put on when its for humanitarian reasons. I created this design from scanning my stones and set it at a mirrored repeat which makes a lovely mosaic design.
