Description:

A quilt panel that fits onto a single yard of Spoonflower's quilting weight cotton. Suitable for additional embellishment if desired.

A quilt panel that fits onto a single yard of Spoonflower's quilting weight cotton. Suitable for additional embellishment if desired. I designed this kite quilt panel, incorporating several of my original fabric patterns, for my grand-daughter. She is fascinated with water and flying and simply loves kites. As she watched me work on it she chanted excitedly,"Pretty kites," and "For me?" She also spent a great deal of time attempting to sing Let's go fly a Kite. Mary Poppins is one of her favourite movies.

karendel says: Wow, it really did print beautifully! I'm emailing this page to a friend of mine, her husband is a kite enthusiast and there's plenty of time for her to whip something up for Christmas. (it must be great to be able to tell your hubby to "go fly a kite" and get away with it!! LOL) Terrific design.

inscribed_here says: Oh my! Thank you all for the amazing comments. It's lovely to have my efforts acknowledged and my ideals voiced by you. I'm very pleased with how well this design has printed. I'm afraid my phone's poor little camera is not built to do it justice.

almost_...

almost_midnight says: Now this is exactly the kind of design I was hoping to see in this contest. The best cheater panels are self-contained, original and suitable to be made up into a crib quilt or to be used as the central focus in a larger project. I like to see cheater designs that would be a little tricky to make up from scratch but not impossible. The cheater concept is aimed at fooling the eye after all. You've achieved all of these elements and more. Well done!

I particularly like the graceful curve of the shoreline. With a few apparently simple strokes, aided by the varying sizes of the kites, you have elegantly created a sense of perspective. The kites themselves are a wonderful mix of patterns that stand out against the plainer water and sand. Too much pattern in one place becomes busy and can cause eyestrain but you've managed a perfect balance. Room for decorative quilting and personalization is desirable after all.

The fact that you've proofed this design is a huge bonus. It tells me that you have already made an effort to polish and refine it and that it wasn't another last minute thrown together set of boring boxes. Better yet, we can see that it works! It's bright, brilliant and fun. How wonderful to see a design that will engage children and stimulate their imaginations without being particularly juvenile, sickeningly cute or gender specific. I would be happy to have this on display in a public area of my home.

You have created an exceptionally appealing and usable cheater panel. Good luck!
