The finished design reminds me of the brambles in the Sleeping Beauty story that grow up around the castle during the hundred years everyone is asleep: "But round about the castle there began to grow a hedge of thorns, which every year became higher, and at last grew close up round the castle and all over it, so that there was nothing of it to be seen, not even the flag upon the roof. But the story of the beautiful sleeping "Briar-rose," for so the princess was named, went about the country, so that from time to time kings' sons came and tried to get through the thorny hedge into the castle." So although there are actually no roses (as my husband pointed out), there are plenty of brambley things and pokey points that look as if they'd hurt if you tried to push your way through them en route to the castle. And it does have a lovely rosey red color. Thus the name. The fabric is based on a section of a botanical drawing I did years ago with a dip pen and a bottle of ink. I scanned the original drawing into Photoshop and put it into repeat, then printed out the repeat, painted it in watercolor, scanned it in again, and quite extensively manipulated it in Photoshop for days, with endless versions and dozens of layers and textures and digital experiments. Yikes! I'm glad I finally settled on one version I kind of liked... I need to step away from the computer!
