This design is a printed reproduction of the tartan which was used on the collar, pockets and backside buttoned belt connector of the 6th Doctor's coat. This design does not just represent a checkered surface; it also imitates the actual tartan weave (with crossing warp/weft threads of different colors).
Please see the 'wall decal' in the small size to see the biggest possible closeup of this design.
You may argue that the tartan pattern has the 'wrong direction' (comparing to what you see on the coat, on which the tartan pattern is diagonal). This is actually wrong; the tartan on the original coat has been cut on the bias; so this layout is correct.
Of course printing will never be able to imitate a true tartan weave (since that would be much thicker and heavier than anything Spoonflower offers); but it will look acceptable as a reproduction from a yard's distance. When used to create a reproduction of the coat, this printed reproduction - no matter on which Spoonflower fabric it is printed - should be flat lined (aka 'doubled') with regular felt or a fabric of similar weight and drape before sewing, just so you get closer to the original wool tartan's weight and drape.
I suggest ordering this design printed on either Cotton poplin (since that is non-shiny and prints the rather bright colors well!) or on Kona Cotton (which prints and holds the colors a tad less bright and really should just be a secondary choice!).
In case you would like to order this design at a different scale or in different colors, all it takes to make that happen at no additional costs is to send me a message :-)
