I like to think of cross-stitching as the original raster graphic; the art of representing a picture by a series of dots happened long before the 1980s.

But it was that decade and the early computers that made raster graphics popular to the masses. To celebrate the 1980s in cross-stitch, here are some original 8-bit raster graphics inspired by Galaxian, Space Invaders, Space Fever and their kin. Stars and a rainbow of friendly aliens are rendered in X's (ten per inch) and ready for your cross-stitching pleasure.

If you want color inspiration, or you don't want to cross-stitch, or you'd like a smaller size X, other options are available here.
