The Mexican Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos nelsoni) was last seen in Mexico in 1964. It was slightly smaller than the grizzlies in Canada and the USA, and was lighter in colour, varying from yellow to silver in colour, with darker fur underneath. Due to its silver colour it was also known as "El Oso Plateado" - the silver bear. The bear was considered a nuisance by cattle farmers, as it hunted the cattle and so the farmers trapped, shot and poisoned the grizzlies until the last one was poisoned in 1964. There have been rumours of some still in existence but there have been no confirmed sightings.
