At Spoonflower we make it possible for individuals to design, print and sell their own fabric, wallpaper and gift wrap. Spoonflower was founded in May 2008 by two Internet geeks — Gart and Stephen — who had crafty wives but who knew nothing about textiles. Five years later, the Spoonflower community now numbers over a million individuals who use their own fabric to make curtains, quilts, clothes, bags, furniture, dolls, pillows, framed artwork, costumes, banners and much, much more. The Spoonflower marketplace offers the largest collection of independent fabric designers in the world.

Digital textile printers are large-format inkjet printers specially modified to run fabric. Unlike conventional textile manufacturing, digital printing entails very little waste of fabric, ink, water or electricity. Spoonflower prints using eco-friendly, water-based inks on natural and synthetic fiber textiles. No additional chemicals are used in the printing or preparation process. This type of printing has the added advantages of showing greater design detail than screen printing, as well as allowing designers the ability to use as many colors as they like in their designs. All Spoonflower fabric gets printed, cut down and shipped around the world from our headquarters in Durham, North Carolina.



Gart is past president of Lulu.com, the largest independent self-publishing platform on the Internet, which he launched with Red Hat co-founder Bob Young in 2002. Prior to Lulu, he co-founded Avista Solutions, the dominant mortgage technology SAAS provider to small and medium-sized banks and credit unions. Gart began his career as a technology consultant and trainer in the United States and Europe. His startups have been listed among the Fast 500 and North Carolina Companies to Watch, won a Web 2.0 award, received an NC Idea Grant and won the Facebook Big Break for Small Business. He is committed to entrepreneurship in North Carolina, and donates 10% of his time to the Triangle region’s CED venture mentoring service.



Allison, who joined the Spoonflower executive team in 2013, started her career as a buyer at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City where she honed her style, love of color and product development chops. In 2002, after earning her MBA from Saint Louis University, she joined a small, growing retail manufacturing business, TRG Group. There, as vice president of marketing, Allison worked with brands including Swiss Army, Timberland, and Callaway Golf, Target, Lands’ End, and Sam’s Club. She has also served as an account director at national advertising firm, McKinney, where she managed the Sherwin-Williams, Nationwide, and Travelocity accounts. A native North Carolinian, Allison has a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and lives in Chapel Hill with her husband, Jeff, and three boys.



Prior to launching Spoonflower, Stephen worked as a consultant for Internet start-ups and served as marketing director for Lulu.com, from its 2002 launch through 2006. He is also the co-author of The Spoonflower Handbook, published by Abrams Books (under the STC Craft/A Melanie Falick Book imprint), and a graduate of the University of North Carolina. Stephen lives in Chapel Hill with his wife, whose passion for crafting inspired Spoonflower, three daughters, two dogs, two cats, two rabbits, a flock of chickens and assorted fish.
