The 18 ft Skiff is considered the fastest class of sailing skiffs and has a long racing history, beginning on Sydney Harbour, Australia in 1892 and a bit later in New Zealand. Although the boat has changed significantly since then, with many technological innovations, the class is popular with sailors of modern 18 ft skiffs looking for a challenge because “modern boats have become too easy to sail” (quoting John Winning, a class champion).
