Description:

Watercolor moths. Watercolor & felt pen on paper. © Su Schaefer 2013

This was my process: I photographed a moth with a nice shape that was sitting on my window, and used the photo to make a stencil of the moth-shape. Then I used the stencil to paint the moth-shape with watercolors, embellishing some with a felt pen, and arranged them so they overlapped here and there.

Watercolor & felt pen on paper, designed as a basic repeat
[Currently set @ Fabric: 460 ppi, Wallpaper: 150, Gift wrap: 350 ppi]

su_g says: Thanks so much Cal! I love your idea of this design for sheer curtains too, a really nice idea and the cotton voile would be excellent for that.

materialsgirl says: Su, love your process and the beautiful results! The white background and see-through overlapping quality has a glass-like ethereal translucency. It.also contributes to a moth-like sense of movement as though watching them on a window pane. Wondering if those characteristics might be enhanced in a sheer curtain where light can actually pass through it too.

fireflower

fireflower says: This looks superb in the yardage view! It's multi-colored, but no color over-rides the others to form extra patterns, so it retains the feeling of a flock of moths, fluttring overhead.

rhondad...

rhondadesigns says: The translucence of your design is emphasised nicely by the overlapping of some of the moths! You have created a real little beauty here, Su!
