    About the Design

Biohazard symbol used as the design element on a 50's-style "umbrella" skirt with multiple panels.

Biohazard symbol used as the design element on a 50's-style "umbrella" skirt with multiple panels. PURCHASE ON SATIN ONLY. Difficulty level: basic to moderate. You'll need to know how to sew seams, insert a zipper and a waistband, and use bias binding. INSTRUCTIONS: 4 panels and a waistband piece per yard (sized for satin fabric, 54" wide). Each yard has enough panels for about 22" at the waist, not counting the seam allowances. Buy enough yards for roughly 1.5 to twice your waist measurement. My waist is 40 inches, so I would need 3 yards. If you want a pouffier hem, buy more yardage, but be aware that the more panels you use, the more you will have to gather or pleat the skirt at the waist. Pre-shrink the fabric, then iron it. Cut the pattern pieces out along the outside of the outlines. The green outline around each piece is the seam allowance. If necessary, trim excess from the tops of all pieces to the desired skirt length. Sew all the panels together along the sides, right sides facing, except for the seam where you'll insert the zipper. Insert a 7" zipper into one seam. Gather or pleat the skirt at the waist to fit. Cut enough of the waistband for your waist measurement plus 6". Interface and attach waistband as usual, using whatever type of closure pleases you. Finish the scalloped bottom edge of the skirt with bias binding.
