Mousehole toile de jouy
My gorgeous Mousehole in Cornwall (pronounced 'mauzall'). A small traditional fishing village with a wonderfully enclosed stone and boulder harbour wall that has been added on over the hundreds years it has stood. You can walk along the wall (and even park on some of it) ~ pretty scary if the sea is rough. Mousehole is very near Penzance (of pirate fame) and was actually destroyed back in 1595 by the Spanish, only a local pub survived.
Mousehole's ancient name was Porth Enys, the "port of the island" because of the small rocky St Clement's Islet that lies about half a mile from the harbour (see above!) A hermit supposedly shone a warning light to boats from it.
Mousehole is famous for this wonderful (and beautifully illustrated) story based on the legendary Tom Bawcock ~ The Mousehole Cat (which is why I included the cat!) If you've not read it I'd recommend it ~ though maybe not the stargazey pie, that looks gross!
