The 'Outdated Technology' design contest was a tough one for me because I still use a lot of it: a rotary princess phone, record players, a boom box, Atari 2600...I just can't let go! It may be 2012 on the calendar, but in my head and heart it is perpetually 1979. ;-)
I started making mix tapes on an old GE tape recorder when I was 9, taping songs off the radio. So here is a collection, in blazing '80s colors. I removed the titles, thinking people could write their own with a Sharpie if they so desired (the large cyan and lime-green cassettes are larger than actual size). I wanted something that could be used on pillows, sheets, books, storage boxes...cool for a college dorm room or a hip studio or loft! But also great for tote bags, and more!
Also available in small-scale and medium-scale versions.

I owe Pennycandy an apology. This design is wonderful and I am so happy that I can support the original artist here on Spoonflower. Plus, if I ever want to get this design printed in different fabrics like canvas or knit, I can. Thank you for making this available here and again, my sincere apologies.
Elisa, I am the original designer of this fabric. I designed it in 2012, and licensed it to Riley Blake for two years, starting in 2013. The fabric you saw on fabric.com is most likely remaining Riley Blake stock. What you bought from Spoonflower is real. Neither design has been ripped off.
You know, the fabric was great but I'm confused as to how this could actually be your design. I found the same fabric on fabric.com for about half the price. I'm really disappointed. I come to Spoonflower to find original designs, not designs that have been ripped off from others and then the price jacked up.

Thanks, Naomi! I was trying to channel the '80s!
Love the colours!
Thank you, Elizabeth and Cindy! @Elizabeth: I have TOTALLY done the same thing! And I love "Baby's in the Mountains"! I was so dorky in the '80s that I didn't discover great '80s alternative stuff until I got to college. Hopefully someday Peter Godwin will make his old stuff available... ;-)
This is great, Cindy :)
HEY, I started making mix tapes off the radio too --- and when I lived in San Francisco in the 80's I made a TON of them. To this day, even with Mp3s all the thing, I still listen to my old mix tapes. Sometimes (this is really funny) an old weather report comes on and for a minute, I'm totally faked out. Like, hey, it's snowing outside and they're calling for 75 for a high and 68 as a low? What??? THEN I remember it's just a tape!!
That's a great idea about the sharpie marker! JUST ONE song for the ultimate mix tape??? It would be "Baby's in the Mountains" because I"ve got it on a mix tape from the 80s and you can't for love or money find the song for download anywhere!!!

I 'sew' need to make a dress out of this fabric.....vintage 50's with a yellow net underskirt....I don't think I can resist much longer!
That is such a great idea, Effy! The Organic Cotton Knit that Spoonflower offers is a bit light (sheer), but might make some awesome leggings to go under skirt. If you make some, please post a pic!
someday I would love to make leggings with this fabric! =)

i really want to buy the original of this!!!!
Thank you, Rachel, Mathew and Matthea (my teenage years, too!). ;-)
yay!! congrats on top ten!
My teenage years! Congrats!
Thanks, Amy and Raven! And thank you, too, Raven, for the mix tape song! Radiohead is one of the few post-1980s bands I like, and that suggestion is another cool, eclectic addition to the list!
Congratulations on top ten!!!
<br>If I could have one song on tape it would be Black Star by Radiohead.
So happy to see that this made it to top 10 Amy!
Thank you so much, Heather and Grace!
congrats on top 10 w/ this gorgeous retro design!
Weee! I LOVE your design! It totally brings back memories of making mix tapes :) Big congrats on making the top 10 Amy!
Thanks to everyone who submitted their ultimate mix tape song(s). It's such an eclectic mix, which is what I was hoping for! I'm going to compile a list and make a mock Spoonflower mix tape insert for the community. If you'd still like to add one, just let me know!
Thank you Kez, Berene, Zoe, and Claire, for your mix tape song contributions! @Kez: Doesn't matter that "Groove Is in the Heart" is from the early '90s--it still has that '70s vibe. In a time when pop music was starting to get stale, their retro album was pretty refreshing! Loved their look, too! @Berene: Beautiful acoustics on that Fleetwood Mac song! Haven't seen the Glee version--I might have to check that out on YouTube. @Zoe: Ah, yes--"The Sun Always Shines on TV". I liked that song better than "Take On Me", though the latter has more memories attached for me, since it was always on the radio. @Claire: "Wouldn't It Be Good" is one of those songs you have to play loud whenever it comes on. I love the part right before the bridge when it gets really quite and there's just some funky synthesizer sounds. And I've never heard "So Macho" but looked it up and found two different songs. The one by Mad Daddys is pretty early '80s-sounding, but I see there's one by someone named Sinitta that is pretty darn cheesy. Is that the one? ;-)
Thank you ALL for such wonderful, generous comments! They always make my day! I can't wait to get sewing...
Congratulations on top ten Amy :) Fabulous design! LOVE :)
Congrats on top ten, great job!
Congratulations on placing in the top ten!
Congratulations on top ten. Looks great printed!
Yay! Congrats on top ten, love this (pinned it) and it looks fabulous printed, as for a good 80's mixed tape song, Wouldn't it be good, Nick Kershaw or for a cheesy one (don't hate me for this) So Macho...burying my head in shame ;-) xx
Congrats on top 10! fab design
Great design, congratulations on top 10! :D
Congrats. Love this design.
Ultimate mix tape? Would have to be A-ha - The Sun Always Shines on TV... there is a confession in there somewhere! :-)
Congrats Amy on your funky-ing up the contest. (What? It's in the dictionary - well, my one anyways) Love this design. Oh and my song for the tape would be "Never going back again." by Fleetwood Mac. I had forgotten about it until they sang it on Glee. Now I'm re-hooked!
well deserved top ten win!
Good to see this in the top ten!! Well done :o)

Congrats on top ten, Amy!!
congratulations!!! :) xxx
Congratulations on placing in the Top Ten with this great mix of mixer tapes, Amy!
LOVE! Fab fab design.. I would go for Groove is in the heart by Deelight on my mixtape but that's 90's! Still gets me dancing though!
Thank you, Julie and Maria! I know exactly how you feel, Julie!
great colors! for the song it's so difficult to decide, I will let the choice to others!
Your colours are so perfect for your design, it makes such a great repeat! I found a lot of old cassette tapes when we had a garage sale (yard sale) last year, but in the end I could not part with any of them.
Thanks, Dianne and Rhonda! @Dianne: Thanks for the song suggestion! Adding it to the list. That old Sammy Davis, Jr., tune brings back great memories (WIlly Wonka!). There was something so magical about really believing the Candy Man could make everything better. @Rhonda: Yes, way too many hungry cassette players. I remember trying to rewind the tape back inside with my fingers or a pencil (the perfect reverse wrench). The worst is when you've played a favorite cassette so much that the sound just starts to fade away to nothing, or the music on the other side starts to "seep" through so there's just a bunch of jumbled noise.
There is a nice balance to the colours in your design layout, Amy. There are lots of fond memories wound into this pattern of cassette tapes! Like you, I still have a collection of favourite tapes. There would have been many more in my hoard but unfortunately, some met a sticky end at the hands of curious young fingers, or hungry cassette players!
"Candy Man" would be my choice. Keepin' with the pennycandy theme. Great edible colors ✿
@ksantipa: I will never let go of that Atari! It has stood the test of time, while we have had two "modern" systems break already in 10 years. Plus, I find it hard to use the new controllers. The joysticks and paddles seem more ergonomic. Wish I could play more often, too!
Thanks for the mix tape contributions, Phoebe and Francine! "Here Comes Your Man" is an awesome song, and the perfect sound for a mix tape! And Phoebe, who from the '80s doesn't have SOME sort of memory tied to "Broken Wings"?!? Such a great representative song from the era. My hope is that, if I get enough responses, I can make a playlist so everyone can check out all the songs and make their own virtual Spoonflower Mix Tape on iTunes.
Thanks Isabella, Sonia, Berene, Phoebe, Francine, Pat, and ksantipa: for such great comments, compliments, and inspired ideas! @Sonia: Cassettes, vinyl, even 8-tracks, have not died in this house. I'm hoping, wishing, dreaming my 2 year-old son appreciates and enjoys all our generation's music as much as or more than what will be on the radio as he grows older. Glad to hear I'm not the only one! @Phoebe: Great idea to try the actual cream background. You're right--the false cream added here is a little deceiving. You can see a portion of the design with white on my blog (pennycandyhandmade.blogspot.com). I think I'll do a test, especially because the printing of cream colors can be hard to predict.
Love it. This design is so versatile in use, the colours, the theme, everything.
And I envy you your vintage Atari. :P
50 yards of this design in a NY loft...happiness!!!
Brings back memories this! :D My ultimate 80's pick: The Pixies, "Here comes your Man"
I kind of like the cream tone to this, but it's not actually cream, is it? It's white, right? White would look good too, but the cream really adds to the vintage, aged look of the design. I think I would really like it best with an actual cream background.
I love the photographic nature of the tapes and the monochrome colors superimposed on them. This would have to be one of my favorite designs of all time. :o) As for an ultimate song... for me it would be Broken Wings, by Mr. Mister.
Love the textures and colours of this. Fun!
Great design ! I love the combination beetween colorful Pop art style and vintage tape cassette design. But be hopefully, Pennycandy ! Tape is not died, with my daugther of 22 months, we are listening every day music with tape cassette... :-)
This wild combination of colours is totally 80s - spot on!
Thanks so much, Virginie!
Fantastic design Amy ! Love your colour palette et great effects :)
This is really great! wonderful design I love it x
Thank you, Greta, Alison, Rachel, Amy, and Miriam! @gsonge: That's such an awesome story, Greta! It was fate that it still played. I know exactly how you felt!
So cool, and colourful. Lovely retro design!! <3
so cool! I agree, it would make a great tote bag! makes me want to dig out all my old mix tapes.
Great colors and design! My first tape had Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl" on it...I found the casette on the ground randomly...and it still worked..I was SO stoked! ha!
Thank you so much, Teja!
Wow! Thank you so much, Claire, Sarah, Angela, and Nikky! Glad you like the Warhol Red version, Angela--I really like that one, too, but I'm still not sure if I pulled it off. I'm going to keep experimenting, especially with other color combos. It'll never measure up to The Master. ;-)
Great idea. Love the mix of of colors, but I am a big Warhol fan (along with everybody else) so I love the just red version the best!
love! colors are perfect
Brilliant, my favourite yet, absolutely brilliant x.
