Supposedly the inspiration for the urban dystopia envisioned in Blade Runner and the slums of Gotham in Batman Begins, The Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong was at one time purported as being the most densely populated place on earth with an est 50,000 souls crammed into a mere 6.5 acre enclave. The city was demolished in 1994.

Ooo I love Gehry - his work is so impossible! Is the doc called, "Sketches of Frank Gehry"? I am for sure going to check that out! Thank you Nancy - I'm wicked pleased I made something that "stuck" with you long enough to make this association. Plus it's GEHRY! Haha - you so made my day :)

I was watching this documentary about Frank Gehry and it reminded me of your design! Check him out, you will like it!
Thank you so much Susan - I would LOVE to see your city skirt when it's done!! And yes it would make anyone look towering ;)
Surely a straight skirt made of this fabric will make me feel taller, if not look taller! It's great.
Thank you so much Shelly, Raven, and Rachel :) Patricia, what an amazing comment! I love that the image struck you as benevolent - I was trying for something that was neither too antiseptic nor too dark: something that superficially might appeared one way, but on closer inspection had another story. The truth is that while I love the country, I am a city girl through and through, so in my opinion even a supposedly failed city such as the walled Kowloon deserves it's share of love if only in honour of the people who once called it "home". Thank you so much for sharing your impressions - it's an amazing perk of belonging to this community!
Ironically, I felt an organic life form present in the fabric. The warm colors and gentle-waving frond effect made me think of coral and sea life. I voted for yours because I felt you brought a of feeling of loving aunts and uncles bending forward to converse. I was amazed when I read the description. The window in the center looked like a smile to me, like smiling tree spirits. Perhaps you are a very loving, compassionate person, maybe a vegetarian, to have so transformed the scene?
I am in love with this! Congrats on top ten!
BiG congrats to you!!
This is one of my favourites - congrats!
There were so many designs in this contest that made me think, "Oh (insert expletive) that's good...!" that I'm extra thrilled and surprised to have squeaked in to the top ten. Yay thank you all so much! :)

The Walled City of Kowloon :
Oh YAY!!! Thank you Maria and Erin :D Sharon, I'm shocked you didn't get in there with Metromash: it's so fab. Isabella: haha yes that would make for some interesting pants (not with my thighs tho - that would just be frightening). Thank you chickoteria and Alex - it's a happy dance morning!
Wonderful design! Congrats on top ten x
Congratulations on placing in the top ten with this dizzying design, Francine! I think it would be a great alternative to tartan for some funky trousers.
WOAH congratulations Francine ~ yippppeeeeee!
I love the bold colours and shapes. It is amazing!
Absolutely fabulous! I put it in 5 yard and it's terrific!
Merci Virginie! Thank you Kelly :) Amy: funny you should use the word INSANE since I was thinking that's exactly what I must be when I fixed this crazy idea in my head - so glad you like it :) Thank you Victoria, Kez and Julie for your nice super words!
Fantastic design! I love the colour and bold vertical shapes. Looks fantastic as two or three yards!
This is an amazing design!
Wow! this really captures the cramped feeling I had looking at images of the city, without the sense of depression and desperation.
This is INSANE, Francine! The depth is amazing. I love how bold it is. It almost gives me the creeps, and vertigo, but that's what I like about it! The way the design just keeps going and going by adding more yardage just makes you feel like there really are 50,000 people crammed in there...and counting! Very interesting and cool!
Fantastic design Francine ! Great repeat :)
Thank you so much Melanie Phoebe! and Cynthia :) And thank you Tessa for that - I'm so happy I managed to capture a little bit of Hong Kong :)
good job on this design. I used to live in Hong Kong, and when I saw your design, it reminded me of the high rises in New Territories in Hong Kong ( I use to live in a high rise in Shatin). Good job for representing Hong Kong. Good luck in the competition.
An awesome design. Not only did you capture the cityscape but the overall modern geometric design that it creates is very appealing to the eye! Really nice!
Francine, this is so awesome!
this is fabulous!
Thank you so much Kathleen, Melanie, Kelly, Greta, Meredith, Cean and Raven! I wasn't sure if I struck the right balance of "creepy but still approachable" with this so I'm over the moon reading your sweet comments :D
Gosh I so totally must get this!
I love the surreal, vertigo-inducing, sci-fi awesomeness of this design. Coool!
I'm in awe of this cheerfully terrifying design. This is amazing, Francine!
FABULOUS! I adore the air conditioners! Agree totally with weavingmajor's comments below. Best of luck in the comp.
wow! what a great design!
spooky and vertigo-inducing and creepy-cheerful and awe inspiring and really, really, cool - what a great interpretation of the city and for the contest. Well done!
Love this, great design!
Yay - thank you so much Christine, Alex, Isabella and Veronica! :D
Wow this is amazing. So striking in color and repeat!
This is SOOOOO awesome! Could make so many cool things from this!
Wow Francine, this is awesome! You've taken the theme to dizzying heights.
I love how the buildings keep going and going in multiple yardage! It's wonderful!
Love the design
You guys are the nicest! I feel a bit like a brash under dressed party crasher among all these stunning city scenes I'm seeing, but I like the way this looks in multiple yardage so I'm bravely going out there to cut up the rug with my white girl's over bite. Ha! ;)
This is cool!
This looks amazing in 2 yard view. Would make fantastc bedding!!
Wow Francine, I can't wait to buy some!!
These towers of never-ending stories are brilliantly engineered, Francine! The architectural illusion projected by this design is awesome!
This is really neato!
This is super cool, Francine!
