I sat watching my mother sew the doll clothes for a beautiful doll with long brown hair. She was so careful with each hand-sewn stitch, twirling the thread so it locked into place perfectly each time. It was Christmas, and the doll was to be dressed and given to the orphanage which my mom’s employer sponsored each year. I was only four years old, yet I felt the love that my mom was giving to this project. In my heart I knew that this doll, as beautiful as she was, belonged to someone less fortunate than myself. I thank my mother for giving me that gift. With each stitch that she sewed, she sowed the meaning of giving into my heart. That life lesson still resonates with me fifty-nine years later. Betsy is a soft doll which I created to resemble the doll sent to the little orphan. She has the same fur hat and trim on her coat that I remember. She also has a fur muff. Betsy is a doll which I hope symbolizes the gift of giving. I created her to create dolls this Christmas for my loved ones. Wishing you Betsy love this holiday season.
