Langlade County's namesake community, a one-time Wolf River lumber town, is now a handful of houses, three taverns, the volunteer fire department station, and a gas station where news of the day is exchanged: Know who had a bear on their deck? Heard any grouse drumming yet? Are the loons back? Skunk smell is the surest sign of spring, but not as celebrated as the arrival of killdeer and their large cousins, sandhill cranes.
