The Hawaiian royals had strong links to Britain. In fact, Hawaii's state flag has a Union Jack in the upper corner. I used the Union Jack (a rather good looking flag) as a starting point for this applique quilt design (had to adjust the proportions to fit a yard of fabric). I wanted to honor Hawaii's last queen, Queen Liliuokalani (she quilted while under house arrest) with this quilt. I tracked down a picture of the Hawaiian crown and illustrated it for the center motif.
