Fionn Mac Cumhaill in his youth was apprenticed to a poet called Finnegas. Finnegas after seven years of trying, finally caught the Salmon of Knowledge. This was a salmon which ate the nine hazelnuts that fell from nine hazel trees into the Well of Wisdom.Finnegas gave the fish to Fionn to cook. Fionn however burns his thumb whille cooking it and puts his thumb to his mouth to ease the pain. He gains wisdom (accidentally) When he serves Finnegas the salmon he's asked if he's tasted the fish. He denies this at first, but eventually admits it.
Fionn's knowledge and wisdom allows him to become leader of the Fianna ( a band of Irish Mythical heros)
