One morning very long ago, Nanbozho left his house to take a walk in the meadow. During his walk, Nanbozho realized that he had grown tired of the blooms on every flower in the field being the same pale white color. He returned home, gathered his paintbrushes and palette and set out to color in the flowers.
Nanbozho painted blooms in red and orange, yellow and green, blue, indigo and violet. As he happily worked away, two small bluebirds flew above his head. The two bluebirds were playing a game of chase with one another, zig-zagging back and forth through the sky.
As the bluebirds' game continued, the little birds started dipping closer and closer to the field where Nanbozho worked. On a particularly low dive, the first little bluebird's wing dipped into the fresh red paint on a fower bud. He left a trail of red behind him as he was chased through the sky. On the next dive, the second bluebird's tail grazed the yellow paint on Nanbozho's brush.
Their game continued with increasing speed until Nanbozho finally finished his work. He looked up to watch the birds and saw that the entire sky was striped with arcs of vibrant color! Nanbozho looked at the birds' work with a smile and returned home, leaving the shimmering rainbow to shine over his newly colored meadow.
