Throughout New England rudimentary carvings of skulls and skeletons can be found at the top of old gravestones. These carvings are known as "Death Heads" and were the first iconography used in gravestone carving. These can be found in burial grounds in places like Boston and Salem MA. dating back to the 1630's. Some speculate that these "Death Heads" represented a physical death and a spiritual rebirth.
