Description:

Rainbow serpent. Watercolor and glitter gun on paper. (ZOOM to see glitter gun effect) © Su Schaefer 2011

A long, long, long time ago, back in the Dreamtime, the Rainbow Serpent lived and slept. When it woke it came out of the ground and gouged the landscape into existence, creating mountains, gorges, rivers and waterholes as it traveled across the land. As it has not been seen for a long, long time it is presumed to be extinct... but is it?
© Su Schaefer 2011

Entry in the Extinct Animals Contest (and THANKS to all for the 34 votes - I like to think those are votes for the Rainbow Serpent NOT being extinct!).

Glitter gun & watercolor on paper, half-brick repeat; currently showing three whole snakes to an 8" x 8" fabric swatch.
[Currently set @ Fabric: 450 ppi (was 300 for Contest), Wallpaper: 150, Gift wrap: 450 ppi]

su_g says: What a rgeat comment Evelyn - thank you so much! It *could* have been the same Rainbow Serpent in that book - I believe it is a great traveler...

serenity_ii says: I grew up reading a Hawaiian book called Maile and the Marvelous One by Bernadette Gomes. It featured probably a different rainbow serpent. Your design made me think of that and smile. : )

su_g says: Certainly bright in the wallpaper mockup - I can see it in small doses in a children's room. (My husband said "Not with that furniture!" - but at least it matches those orange flowers!)

fireflower

fireflower says: Well, perhaps extinct in waking life ... but I'm sure that any serpent this delightful (not to mention useful!) must still be being sung into existence in the other reality of dreams. Lovely, Su!!!

rhondad...

rhondadesigns says: You have created a vibrant new fabric landscape to illustrate this classic Dreamtime story, Su! Your brightly coloured design is full of joyful vitality. Indeed, you could say that it is wriggling and squirming with barely contained energy!

joanmcl...

joanmclemore says: We've got lots of serpents hanging around here this summer. One crawling up the front of the house and one sticking it head out from behind the garage door trim. A little too close for me and none are so pretty, since those have become "extinct". ;)

pd_frasure says: This is a fun coincidence, because I am working on rainbow stripes across a sheet of paper. But the serpent has not yet arrived! There are more miracles waiting to be created! :)
