Maroochy was a beautiful maiden, who was promised to Coolum. The match was approved by the tribal elders. Ninderry, a warrior from an inland tribe saw Maroochy, and wanted her for himself, so he stole her away from her coastal home. When Coolum discovered that his beloved Maroochy had been stolen from him he went to steal her back in the night. When the sun came up next morning and Ninderry realised that he's lost his prize, he took off after Coolum, tracking the couple back towards the coast. He threw his Nulla, hittiing Coolum, and making his head fly off into the sea. Coolum's head became Mudjimba island, and Coolum turned to stone, becoming Mount Coolum. The spirits were angry that Ninderry would not honour the approved match, and turned Ninderry to stone too. He's now Mount Ninderry. Maroochy was heartbroken, and crept away to the Blackall Ranges and wept for her lost love. Her tears ran together and became the Maroochy River. She turned herself into a swan so that she could follow Coolum's spirit and be with him. She still swims and flies up and down the river, and so do her children, and her children's children.
