Description:

8" repeat of trains which persistently aren't there. 8" repeat of trains which persistently aren't there.

An invisible train sometimes runs on our line.
With the barriers down there is no other sign.
So we wait at the crossing with nothing in view.
When the gates go back up then we know it's been through.

Yet it isn't as though there are no trains around;
for we've seen quite a few going by, making sound.
These are trains with but one carriage, rarely with two;
or with testing equipment, containers or crew.

It is harder to say what the train we can't see
might be pulling along with it. What could it be?
If it runs to a schedule it's one I've not seen -
an invisible time-table somewhere, I mean.

As the signal lights flash and the sirens give sound
and the barriers start to descend to the ground,
There is nothing to do but to wait and to strain
for some sign it is not the invisible train.

Other colours, stylings, sizes and orientations are available on request and you can even ask for a combination of several designs together.

rhondad...

rhondadesigns says: The subtle suggestion of a train that doesn't belong to any one time or place gives your design a universal appeal. I am sure that "invisible" trains haunt level crossings in many locations around the world!

sef

sef says: I think there may be fewer of them around here now. This poem was written (or wrote itself!) about 10 years ago while I was trapped at the level crossing yet again during what seemed to be a mass invasion of invisible trains to the area.

victorialasher says: Hahaha. We have an invisible train that runs through our town too.

sef

sef says: It's one of mine. I hoped that was obvious - as Spoonflower displays the link to the page with the design title followed by "by SEF". I hadn't yet worked out a better place to duplicate my name. I also can't stop Spoonflower from tagging it with "the" along with the other umpteen unrelated designs which merely happen to have the definite article in their titles!

pond_ripple says: This is a wonderful poem, who is it written by?

sef

sef says: It's kind of hard to draw something which isn't there! My other, quite different, attempt had an actual modern train in it - but I was never entirely happy about that. Whereas this image kept coming into my head and demanding to be rendered instead. So in the end I humoured it. Rather like writing down the unbidden poetry is sometimes the only way to get it out of my head where it's being a nuisance.
