A cheater sampler, for those without the time to do all that embroidery. See the Flickr link to see the design right side up.Besides the traditiona
Besides the traditional upper and lower case alphabets, the numbers from 1-0, and a tree of life; I have added some other symbolic elements. Some of these are traditional, some I made up.
An owl for wisdom, Blue birds for happiness, wheat for fertility, a fountain of water for constant refreshment, The sun for light and laughter, the moon for peace and tranquility, vines to bind you together, flowers for beauty and variety.
There is a very light "tea" tint to the background to give the finished sampler a vintage look. Enough room has been left to allow personalization with names and a date.
Make them for all your married friends; 4 samplers to a yard of quilting weight cotton; with allowance for approximately 1/2 inch hem (there is a guide line).
Just one additional note; every "stitch" was individually drawn for a more authentic look.
This could also be used as a tea towel.

Love this Victoria, really great idea to do a sampler, and i love how you've made it look really authentic by doing all the 'stitches' by hand....really worth the extra work. Fab details too with the symbolic icons. Really stands out in the contest as being unique and beautiful!

One of my favorites in the Alphabet contest. That was a hard contest. I'm glad I didn't have to vote for only one.
Here it is, right side up, with names and date added to show how it would look; and with the "S"s fixed.

Wow this is gorgeous! what a great idea
Thank you Mimi.
Awesome work Victoria, It really looks like it is embroidered!
Thank you Lulakiti. Weavingmajor, I think that's what I'll do with my proof.
Wow - that really DOES look like an embroidered sampler! Very cool!
LOL - I did think it was intentional, I know I've seen it before on other samples! Francine - great idea to use this as a tea-towel! That would be so deliciously swanky!
Oh, and thank you, Kelly, for spotting it!
By the way, I fixed the "S"s. I guess I either need to be fully awake when I design, or fully awake when I proof.
Thank you Francine. I was thinking it would make an amusing tea towel. Probably someone's first thought would be, "Oh no! I can't believe she's using that sampler as a towel!"
Great idea for alphabet Victoria - I can totally see this as a tea towel hanging from the stove handle in my beloved grandma's kitchen!
I guess I did, Alex. Thank you Cean, Vo, Babysisterrae, Khoward, Scrummy, Rhonda, Nadja, Patty, Catru, Weavingmajor, and Kec19. I think I might offer this for sale, personalized with digital "stitching" (thanks for that term Catru), so all the stitching will match. It wasn't intended to look like counted cross stitch, although the alphabet and numbers are done in cross stitches; so any fabric will work, although it's sized for the quilting weight.
holy moly you got a lot of comments quick.
What a clever idea! I love it, it is so beautiful.
oh, this is beautiful, Victoria! Well done! I love how you've done the subtle color variations in the thread, it really gives it a sense of dimensionality. all the elements are so nice - the tree, the owl, the sun... beautiful!
<p>I thought maybe the linen-cotton canvas would make a good substitute for aida cloth, but then I realized there's really no way to make the X's line up with the fabric even if you sized the X's just right... sigh. I think it would actually print better on the quilting cotton, especially since that's how the original ones were usually worked! What a nifty idea for an alphabet fabric - lovely and uncontrived!
incredible work!!! it's really digitally stitched !! :D Love it :)
Fantastic Victoria! I think it was definitely worth the effort to draw each stitch by hand, it's truly beautiful.
This composition is beautiful, the record is perfect
This beautiful creation has the same vintage charm as the traditional samplers of the past which inspired your design, Victoria!
beautifully done Victoria! xxx
looks great victoria!
LOL, love it. Would be fab if SF had aida cloth to print it on!
This completely looks like it was hand stitched in the 1800's, great job completely capturing the charm of a hand embroidered keepsake! Thanks to you now we non-crafters can perpetrate like we can embroider without all of the blood, sweat and tears I'm sure goes along with it!
