Mock Smock Embroidery Small fabric by varju on Spoonflower - custom fabric

More about this preview. Help_icon

This pattern was created based off of a woman's smock (ca. 1630) stored at the Victoria & Albert Museum, (museum # T.2-1956) According to the museum: "The embroidery features a repeating pattern of flowers, insects and animals, including both real and fantastic creatures. Four motifs were copied from a book called A Schole-House for the Needle by Richard Schorleyker. This was a very popular design book for both embroidery and lacemaking, first published in 1624 and reprinted in 1632." Originally, this was linen embroidered with a deep carnation pink silk. For this pattern, I have spaced the elements a little further than originally, though the elements themselves are still true to size.
