I'm a dutch illustrator and cartoonist who likes to sew. So I was jumping with joy when I stumbled upon Spoonflower. It's so much fun to see other designers work and the contests are a weekly inspiration boost.

The soon I saw this breakfast theme, I thought it would be nice to give you a little sneak peak of all kinds of people at breakfast time. I started to draw buildings, going from fantasy castles to apartment buildings to a hodgepodge of all kinds of houses. I ended up drawing my own house, which is a very simple 30's townhouse. I thought it would make a nice repeat with the pointy roof every 2 or 3 houses. But I didn't like the repeat, so I started to cmd+X all the things that didn't need to be there and there it was: a 'windows and doors themed breakfast fabric'. I liked it but I couldn't really part with the illustration of my own house. That's why I decided to use both designs for a cut and sew placemat. About the house: it's situated in Gouda where houses tend to 'sink' because the ground is very humid and soft. That's why there are cracks in the wall and all the windows are lobsided. The girl in the attic is me of course, drawing until the crack of down, having coffee for breakfast. I incorporated some of my other Spoonflower designs in the curtains. It's a very simple cut and sew placemat. Just cut them out, use one design for the front, the other for the back, and some bias tape to finish the edges. After the contest, I will upload a different file that has 1 placemat on a fat quarter of linen cotton canvas.

betje says: Ok, my revision landed elsewhere. Luckily I could still withdraw this one from the contest and submit the other. I thought the contest was closed because I can't do a thing with this one anymore. So here it is, all crisp and clear: http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/488088 I found out, thanks to weavingmajor it somehow fixes on the height. So pasting 2 designs on top of each other to make the design more like a square in stead of a rectangle helped solving the problem.

weaving...

weavingmajor says: added some comments on the Flickr forum. But for now, everyone just click on the 'zoom' view - it's crystal clear (and adorable too, Betje!)

kezia says: Hmm.. I see what you mean.. I think when it is on screen it will be at 72dpi and your line detail is very fine so this is why it looks blurry. You can upload up to 40mb- it will take a long time to upload but try a file size nearly 40 mb at 300dpi and play with the scale when it has uploaded.. maybe that would work?

betje

betje says: I'm glad you like it. I'm really sad about the way it's showing. It's so blurry you can hardly see what it is. Have you guys got any idea how I can change this? I uploaded 150dpi and higher, it makes no difference :'(
