My design is inspired by the diner and service station that my grandparents, Harry and Louise, owned back in the 50s -- The Shady Dell, in Coal Valley, Illinois, was an authentic family owned joint. It was a meeting place for local farmers, a faithful bunch of truck drivers, and various travelers on the way to somewhere else. My grandpa manned the gas/service station outside while my grandma ran the diner inside. Starting at 5 each morning grandpa fried up 12 dozen donuts and grandma made 6 different pies (4 fruit and 2 cream), from scratch of course! My mom washed a lot of dishes, and cleaned, stocked and organized the Coca Cola cooler while her two younger sisters "intimidated" customers when they sat on their favorite stools. When I saw this theme I immediately thought of the Shady Dell and how to incorporate it into a breakfast themed fabric design. I decided to incorporate diner lingo and was inspired by the Richard Scary children's books where everything is labeled (my son loves those books and so did I!). In the near future I hope to make up a "pie" themed fabric to match!
