Legend has it that Buddha invited all the animals to compete in a race. The first twelve animals to finish the race would be honored with being animal of the year, in the order that they finished. Twelve animals to represent each year within the lunar calendar cycle. This illustration, done in the chinese paper cut style, shows all twelve animals while featuring the rabbit.

In order of race finish: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

inscribed_here says: How lovely, Lucinda. All of your animals looks so happy! It's wonderful that you've included a lesson with your design. I didn't know about the race and I can never remember the order of the signs. It's always great to learn something new.

lucindawei says: Thanks Victoria! I've heard of two versions, I like this one, it has a lot of interesting details about the race. Oooo, round pillow does sound lovely.

lucindawei

lucindawei says: Thanks Christine! I think in the story, the dog decided that taking a bath in the river was more important than finishing the race and that the snake rode in the hoof of the horse
