Bikes have represented freedom for me as long as I can remember. As a miserable college sophomore down to my last 7 bucks, I was doomed to spend fall break in the dorm. Instead, I hopped on my bike and rode from Ithaca to Philadelphia to visit my sweetheart (now wife). Since that day I've known that as long as I have a bike, I'm a free man. This particular bike is a loose rendering of the velveteen rabbit of bicycles, my beloved nearly antique recumbent.

gart

gart says: The bike is indeed laid back. It has an interesting history. The designer, Gardner Martin, is kind of for bikes what Eiffel is to towers. In the 70's he had made a name designing bikes for human powered speed records, and had managed to set a few. At some point, he designed this for his wife, who had arthritic wrists and couldn't easily ride a normal diamond frame. Ironically, the design turned out to be both very comfortable and blazingly fast. A fully-faired aluminum version of the exact same bike, called the 'gold rush' won the DuPont prize for the first human powered vehicle to exceed 65 mph about 25 years ago, and is now on permanent display at the Smithsonian. My bike is a steel touring version that is quite substantially more beat up than the one pictured here.

ceanirminger says: A great story truly worthy of such a great illustration. Love the angularity. The drawing and style together make the bike look slightly soft, like it might feel like velveteen. It's great!

victorialasher says: Your love has made it real. I'm impressed with the Ithaca to Philly trip also; knowing you couldn't take the turnpike or freeways; and all those mountains in between, whew.
