This is my entry for the civil rights toile contest. I wasn't going to enter this contest but... well, here it is. I decided to go with something light but pivotal in the history of early feminism. This is my ode to Amelia Bloomer and her invention of the bloomers. Where would we be today if we could not even wear what we wanted? Of course the social importance of this fashion is so much more than just that, which is why I dedicate this to Amelia!
Oh - and pictured here, along with my fairly inaccurate portrait of Ms. Bloomer herself, are a pair of bloomers, an early women's basketball team (drawn from a photograph of girls from Smith College in 1902), a young Amelia Bloomer on a bicycle (I am still blown away with myself that I drew a bicycle), and a woman wearing an early "Bloomer outfit".
