The swatch for this has arrived,
Yes, I get the feeling that many designer think that every inch needs to be covered. I have done designs both ways. As a quilter, I sometimes want a design that I can fussy cut and not cut into the design. For the contests all over designs seem to do better. I think I have this in my next swatch collection, or one with a few more leaves floating around.
Gorgeous colors k.h. I see by your comment about reworking this that you're responding to the intricacy of other designs, but I think one thing undervalued in textile design is negative space or "white space." Keep up the good work!
Wow! What a group of entries in this contest. Maybe I should have reworked this design.
Your dahlia looks fantastic. You've really made the restricted palette work for you here.
Your lovely scarlet dahlias look wonderful with the touches of gold highlights on them.
This would make nice pillow panels or quilt blocks in the basic repeat. I thought it looked better for the contest in half-drop,
Karen, thank you for your comment. I had tried some other flower photos, but I wasn't happy with the results. I didn't want to do a design where the flowers weren't somewhat natural in color. Buyers should have the choice of a number of designs that would work well together. I haven't sent for a swatch yet. I'm thinking off companion designs or different colors first. I have one trial design in my gallery now.
This is so lovely. I used the same color for my background also. A quilters dream to create something using this palette.
I wanted my design not to be stylized flowers, though there is nothing wrong with them and they are probably more suited to the limited palette. It just isn't my idea of a botanical print. I tried editing many different photos before I came up with this combination of 2 photos and hand drawing with the computer. The palette seemed to lack enough contrast in value without black and white. My other designs, which aren't public now, were too busy with background details.
Thanks for the comment.
That's definitely a botanical print! And it works with the limited palette, too!
I could have tweaked it some more, but by entering it now, maybe I'll get something else done. Wish I had a dollar for every hour I spent trying different ideas.
I finally settled on the design for the botanical prints contest.
