*If your baby already has a beard, you can skip step number 4.

Step One: MEASURE your baby’s head. This kit should work for most babies and some toddlers, with heads up to 22 inches (approx. 55 cm) in circumference.

Step Two: CUT out hat pieces and beard pieces.

Step Three: SEW three hat pieces together along the indicated seam lines, with patterned sides of fabric facing. Repeat for other three hat pieces, then sew the two halves together, turn up hem, and sew in place. (Add optional elastic now, if desired.) Turn hat inside out and test for fit. (OMG your baby is adorable in that hat!)

Step Four: SEW the two beard pieces together with right sides facing, leaving a gap where indicated. Turn the beard inside out, then top stitch around the edge.

Step Five: ADD hook-and-loop (Velcro) tabs to the back of the beard, one on the left, and one on the right. Add corresponding hook-and-loop tabs to the hat by testing for fit and marking with a felt-tip pen, then machine-sewing the hook-and-loop fastener in place. Make sure to stitch the hook-and-loop on securely (don’t use stick-on hook-and-loop, as this creates a choking hazard).

Step Six: You have your very own Baby Gnome! What a cutie! *Remember: babies should only dress as gnomes when properly supervised by a responsible adult.
