Collection: Bouba/Kiki Effect

Which one is Kiki? Which one is Bouba? Regardless of language or culture of origin, 88-98% of humans give the same answer.
The "bouba/kiki effect" is a cognitive linguistic phenomenon, first studied by Kohler in Tenerife in 1929, and famously revisited by Ramachandran and Hubbard in 2001. Subjects from a variety of cultures and language groups are shown these two shapes, and asked "Which one is Kiki, and which one is Bouba?" 88-98% of all people respond the same way, suggesting that the evolution of language is not arbitrary, but has a neurological basis. Interestingly, only 56% of individuals with autism diagnoses agree with the standard answer. What do you think? Which one is Kiki and which one is Bouba?
Even if you're not a cognitive linguistics nerd, this neat little pattern is charming for quilt squares and spring dresses. If you'd like a customized pattern size or color palette, please inquire!

Thank you :) Ever since I heard about it, I've been running around like a madperson, asking everyone I know which is which. The colors all print up very nicely on the modern jersey- now I'll have a scarf to start my linguistic geek conversations!

Beautiful colors in this collection! I had to take a side trip to read about the Kiki and Bouba study, and it was fascinating! Thanks for sharing that.
Interesting study. Nice pattern.
Thanks, Nadia! I thought it made a cute floral, even if you don't catch the reference (but I'm delighted that you did!)
Great idea to turn this classic experiment into a pattern!
