Based on many, many photos, plus vintage lithos and fashion plates, this is my take on young Augusta Ada Byron encountering the Difference Engine for the first time, while Charles Babbage stands proudly by his machine. The Difference Engine was the stepping stone to the pair theorizing about Babbage's idea of an Analytical Engine. In her notes for Babbage, she described in detail how the machine could be told to calculate Bernoulli numbers... essentially, the first computer program. Yep, in 1843.
