Coober Pedy has some 4000 residents from more than 40 countries. Taking its name from the Aboriginal word "kupa" (uninitiated man or white man) and "piti" (hole), Coober Pedy produces most of the world's opals. Its opal fields, discovered in 1913 by 14-year-old Willie Hutchison, cover an area of 4,954 square kilometres and consist of 70 individual fields.

Thanks so much much for the postive feedback Kelly! It may be a long time before we make it to Coober Pedy or White Hills, but if you're ever up my way, we could go exploring around the old copper mines : )
beautiful! This looks great on the swatch, FQ and yard alike - such heavenly colors! I'll go with you to visit the opal mines - I've always wanted to go... ;oD
Ooo yes Su! I googled White Cliffs and walked around town : ) It looks hot! But what fun it would be to dig for opal!
Add White Cliffs to your list Lori - we stayed there in the Underground Motel on our recent travels, and this design makes me think more of White Cliffs (and Andamooka) opal than the kind you get at Coober Pedy. In fact this would be fantastic as bedspreads or feature wall hanging or something like that in the Motel (it's up for sale so maybe the new owner will want to refurbish...)
Hi Boo! So nice to have you back. Thanks for taking your valuable time to comment! Oh how I would LOVE to visit Austrailia and see the opal mines! Someday.....
Lovely Lori! Looks great printed :) I can just imagine how much you'd enjoy a trip to Coober Pedy - such a dusty dry place with such beautiful glistening stones lurking under the surface. Certainly a big contrast to the lush landscapes I've seen in your photos. I just love those old spools of thread too :)
Thank you Amy! I really like these color too!
This design is really something else, Lori. It just fascinates me and the colors are delicious!!!

Thank you Su! That is so nice of you to say! It came in at 22nd place. The best I've ever done : )
This still holds the wow factor for me - every time I loot at it - and I hope it does really really really well in the contest as it is just so special!
Thank you Tina!
Incredible opalescent effect!
Thank you so much for your kind words, Julia! So glad you like my opal : )
So charming and sweet! how lovely soft colours! love it! good luck
Thank you so much, Victoria!
I think you did a fantastic job of capturing opalescence on fabric.
Hi Rhonda! I'm so happy you like my opal. Thank you!
So nice of you to say Jade! Thank you!
This is a gorgeous design! It captures the opalescent glimmer and colour marbling so well!
Oh gosh Lia, thank you for your lovely comment!
I'm not otherwise a fan of opal, but I think you did a really good job of depicting it here :)
It is the perfect opalescent effect, it is such a beautiful work !
Thank you so much Jill and Julie!
Beautiful opalescent pattern!
Beautiful opal! Thanks for the history about Coober Pedy, very interesting!
Thanks so much Shelly! I am really excited to see this one too! Ill be sure to post it.
Oh, I think you succeeded, Lori! I thought opals immediately when I saw this. You got the colors spot on! (and I used to deal in gemstones, so I know a bit about it!) Lovely, I can't wait to see the swatches on this one. I hope you'll post them!
Thank you Sylvie! I'm really excited to see the test swatch for this one! It seems like it's taking forever : )
Wonderfully swirly and soft with an amazing light that seems to shine out from within! Really well done! :-)
Oh gosh Su, that makes me want to change the name of this! In the earth at Coober Pedy....it ain't opal! : )
Thanks for taking a look!
Oh Deborah, that's too funny! Thanks so much for your comments. They mean a lot to me. I've never used the cotton silk before, but you make me want to try it!
Beautiful - especially in the swatch view where you can see so much more of the wonderful details! Love your note too! Our Police have recently been (fruitlessly) searching some of the many holes in the moonscape that is CP looking for the recently disappeared...
This is a beautiful design, Lori, and the notes are so interesting. Opals are beautiful gems. I am embarrassed to say that when I read "Coober Pedy," I thought it was the name of a rock band!! Wonderful repeat too. It's impressive at the yard view. Talk about a candidate for Spoonflower cotton silk!
Thank you, Vannina! I had a lot of fun with this contest!
Very nice design. The multicolored shades of the opal are really well done!
