A conical pixie hat in decorated christmas tree format. On a fat quarter of any fabric you get a single hat. On a yard of the wider fabrics you get a set of 6 hats to make with different colours of baubles (provided you keep your seams tiny!).
A flimsy fabric is definitely going to need stiffening with a suitable lining material. There is just one seam required - to join up the straight edges and make a cone. Cut the fabric flush with the ends of the pointed fir fronds but leave a seam allowance along the 2 straight edges. For a fabric which frays, you will want to hem the pointy base of the hat with blanket stitch. Optionally add a pom-pom, star or angel to the top of the hat. The 5 extra baubles can be dangled from the base of the tree or paired into ear-rings (I use soft cotton loops over the ears!) with the last one used as a drink tag or coaster.
On gift-wrap paper, ask for a different layout to get 6 hats which you simply cut and secure with sticky tape!
