Check out my DIY handbag pattern collections: Generation One makes a sweet little squarish bag; Gen Two Is still ladylike but more rectangular and a bit roomier. Links are provided to pictures of the construction process on Flickr.

This is my original prototype of a DIY handbag - one thing I hate is pinning little paper pattern pieces to fabric, but here, the fabric IS the pattern! Not only can this be turned into a cute little purse - you need only to add batting or interfacing and a button and buttonhole positioned where you'd like it (personally, I recommend a magnetic snap closure), You could also pin this to another yard or two of different prints and cut out, say, three purses at once.
So, for the price of a yard of fabric, you get not a purse pattern but the purse itself as well as the means to make more purses if you care to.
