Fashion dolls with heart: in different degrees of dress for children to add their own touches. Entry in the Fashion Contest. © Su Schaefer 2013.
My overall design concept was to stimulate children to add their own touches (e.g., faces, belts, collars, decorations), to make their own outfits and to dress the undressed dolls. This was my entry in Spoonflower's Fashion Contest.
Other versions and some of the individual 'fashion fabric' designs are in the Collection: Fashion fabrics.

And thanks Sue Ellen for your fun comments too - as to when I'll be wearing the blue-yellow party dress with my favorite belt - I think it will be a way off yet...
Posted about 3 years ago.
Thanks for your fun and helpful comments Sheila! I have a collection of paper dolls - mostly vintage - on my Pinterest pages, there sure are some great ones around, at least on-line - much harder to find in actual paper these days, so glad you were able to buy some!
This is such a fun design! And I love that you've used your designs for the clothes. So, when do we get to see that blue-yellow dress with your favorite belt made up & displayed on you?
Oh this is so fun Su! I WANT to play with these too! Your fabrics all look so wonderful in the dresses. I love the decal idea! And it is such a great thought you had to leave a bit to the childs imagination, to let them be creative as well! Wonderful idea Su! I will admit.... I started collecting some paper doll designs online a few weeks ago. And i purchased a set of paper dolls by Mary Englebreit that Michaels had near the register. I don't think paper dolls will ever get old.
Thanks for your great feedback Rhonda and Audra; and you're right - it is a great way to use your own designs. I sometimes do mockups before ordering fabric to sew - to help medecide on scale, color, style etc. and doing this design has convinced me that I should do more of it.
Wonderful design -- like clothes flying out of the closet! It is also so smart for you to pull from your existing designs!
I love how you have used snippets of your own fabric designs to create the outfits for your charming dolly fashionistas, Su! The sweet pattern of pink hearts makes a delightful background for the dollies to parade upon! ;-)
Thanks so much for your comment Tina, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed running different 'fashion fabrics' through these little classic dress shapes, I think I could do that all day long and still not get bored with it (so much quicker than sewing too!)
I really enjoyed looking at the outfits because I imagined they are your favorite! I especially like seeing your textile patterns in the dresses!
A portion of the design that you won't see as a swatch - showing my favorite belt on the blue and yellow patterned dress center-left. In fact I just love how that outfit turned out!

Shirley thanks so much for your lovely comments and great feedback - so true your observation that this is where it all began for so many of us, I'm so glad these relatively simple toys still pack lots of fun times! Thanks again!
This is pure genius! Its where it all began with so many of us. With a packet of washable markers and perhaps a few little beads ,you have a present which will supersede all others. The decal suggestion was another superb addition. What fun- wins the contest for me.
Thanks so much Melanie and Ceri - and it is so good to know that little girls do still love paper dolls: I had so much fun with them as a child, and especially making new outfits for them out of fancy papers and with coloring in and so on. It really was the start of something!!
Su, little girls still love paper dolls. I have an eight year old who can't get enough of them. I love your idea of personalising them, great fun!
Fabulous design and idea Su, they would be lots of fun for children to personalise, well done!
Thanks so much Kim and Sylvie - for the reassuring feedback and decal ideas... As soon as I finished this design I started worrying whether modern children are too sophisticated for these sort of simple pleasures (not having my own, and nephews rather than nieces). I was hoping to get some idea of whether it might work or not, so thank you both so much!!
Super design Su. If they are printed on a decal the children could cut them out with little tags and stick them to some card and then they'd be interchangeable... They could play dolls all day and then some.. :-)
Too much fun,Su ! I had considered paper dolls for this contest but my imagination didn't stretch as far as yours. Endless possibilities ! I'd love to print decals of this and of the companion fabrics in this collection,"sandwich" poster board in between, and create stand-up,repeat use paper dolls. Personalized with embellishments as you suggested of course! Best of luck in the contest ! Kim@krussimages
