Painting by the Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder that depicts a scene populated with literal depictions of Dutch language proverbs.
Slightly less than full scale (to fit in the width of Spoonflower fabric).
Bruegel's paintings have running themes of the absurdity, wickedness and foolishness of humans, and this painting is no exception. The picture originally was entitled The Blue Cloak or The Folly of the World indicating that he was not intending to just depict proverbs, but rather, a study of human stupidity. Many of the people depicted show the characteristic blank features that Bruegel used to portray fools.
