The 1778 painting is based on an attack that took place in Havana harbor in 1749. Brook Watson, then a 14-year-old cabin boy, lost his leg in the attack and was not rescued until the third attempt, which is the subject of the painting. At his death in 1807, Watson bequeathed the painting to a school in Sussex, with the hope that it would prove "a most usefull Lesson to Youth".
The image is approx 18" x 22", or about one-quarter the size of the original painting.
