Description: Digitally drawn cricket and applied layers of texture/pattern makes for an active and colorful batik-like surface. The crickets inspired me to play with several other versions of this motif, so please click through to see the whole collection!

su_g says: So beautiful Cal - and it looks wonderful printed too! It's nice to think of it as a dog jacket for the puppy named 'Cricket' - and I hope we get to see a picture of that!

pinned_...

pinned_together says: Hi Cal, I especially loved this cricket batik--the subtle colors & texture are wonderful. I feel a little sheepish that I'm using it for a dog jacket for my puppy Cricket... she'll have to grow into it. I should have some pieces left over to use in a collage, though. Thanks, Mary Jo

materialsgirl says: Rhonda, thank you! Such an eloquently concise description....almost a haiku! You do have such a lovely way of seeing and expressing yourself.

rhondad...

rhondadesigns says: The gleaming luminosity of the richly textured background works well as a foil for the leaping and lurking crickets!

materialsgirl says: Haha.....funny, I didn't initially remember the Japan connection to crickets until I began looking at pictures prior to drawing mine and seeing the cricket cages for 'fighting' crickets (like mini sumo wrestlers haha!) and the 'singing' pet variety online. Kind of serendipitous that it fits so nicely into my love of all things Japanese. Mainly, though, I just love to draw and haven't done much of it lately. So thank you my cricket muses!

vanilla...

vanillabeandesigns says: It sure does look batik - ey! You must have been happy when the cricket category came up as a contest ~ wikipedia tells me that selling crickets (as singing pets) was VERY popular in Japan for centuries, peaking in the 19th century, but for the most part the craze is over now.

materialsgirl says: Hi Lisa! I had so much fun with these crickets. I think I may do some sort of cricket montage for my wall with the swatches. On this one I also did kind of a ditsy with the background patterns to enhance the ditsy energy pattern of the crickets. It turned out looking very much like batik.

vanillabeandesigns says: Oh I just love that mysterious background, Cal! The yellow - gold bits add some flashes of light, puts me in mind of reflections on the water. Looks like it printed up beautifully!
