Inspired by the science of prisms, and the seemingly magical way in which light is transformed through a piece of glass.
Reading a science book with my son one evening about Newton's experiments with light and prisms, my imagination was sparked by the simple beauty of the way in which white light is separated into a rainbow of colours. I decided to do some research so I could set up an arrangement of prisms interacting with beams of light, and somehow create a repeating pattern from this. While I didn't have the materials to set up real, physical prisms, I did some experimentation with a wonderful educational tool called yenka.com. It allowed me to play around and get an idea of how light interacts with prisms in different situations. From there, the design process was kind of exciting, since much of the layout was determined by the calculations for the angles of refraction and dispersion (okay, I admit I took some leeway here, for the sake of aesthetics), so I wasn't really sure what the final result was going to look like until it all came together!
This is my entry for the Spoonflower "geek chic" fabric design contest.

Hi Sheryn - Happy New Year to you too, and thanks for you interest! Yes, the 3 smaller pics are (1) and overview of the design and (2,3) detail shots from the design. The prisms are white-ish, the background black, and the rest are rainbow bursts, so not much in the way of neutral colours. If you can't preview the artwork too well, I'd suggest purchasing a small sample swatch first before committing to a larger quantity. Good luck, and let me know if I can be of more help.
