The following story is my original work based on fact and the drawing is original. (A dirty secret: Lizzie is wearing a cape because I can't draw arms! :-( )
One night in 1859, the harvest moon rose over a small town on the flat plains of the territory of Kansas. Lizzie had heard the men talking excitedly about gold being discovered in the Rockies of Colorado. Always restless, Lizzie wondered what the Rockies even looked like. She donned her red cape, a present from her mother back in Maryland, and decided to leave her home on the prairies and set sail for the West. The men of the town had built the wind ship, but she was the one who had donated her crazy quilt to use as a sail. She felt as if the ship was half hers. Lizzie knew this was her “now or never” night because usually, out on the prairies, the wind dies down as the sun sets, but this night the wind blew strong from the east. Lizzie got goosebumps on her arms and shivered, she was so excited. She grabbed her pet duck and took one last glance at the lantern lights shining in the windows of the town, then released the brake on the Wind Ship, let out the sail, and with a few creaks of the wheels on the Wind Ship, she was sailing on a sea of grass, west toward the Rockies.
