Gaff-rigged skiffs, racing. These boats have fascinated me since I first saw a 1930s picture of one. Entry in the Sailing Contest. © Su Schaefer 2013
Gaff-rigged skiffs, racing. I've been fascinated by the shape of these boats ever since I saw one in a 1930s picture on the brag wall of the Sydney Flying Squadron (Australia's oldest open boat sailing club). Modern racing skiffs are a wonderful sight on Sydney Harbour - looking like a flight of water-borne butterflies. My entry in the Sailing (palette-restricted) Contest.

Currently set at a very SMALL SCALE - contact me before ordering if you'd like that changed - comment below. 'Traditional sailor's jersey stripes' is a coordinating stripe for this design.

The 18 ft Skiff is considered the fastest class of sailing skiffs and has a long racing history, beginning on Sydney Harbour, Australia in 1892 and a bit later in New Zealand. Although the boat has changed significantly since then, with many technological innovations, the class is popular with sailors of modern 18 ft skiffs looking for a challenge because "modern boats have become too easy to sail" (quoting John Winning, a class champion) (Wikipedia).
Hand drawn and line art, designed as a basic repeat.

You and me both Moira Rae - re the challenge! Thanks so much for the encouragement re the diagonals!
Posted over 3 years ago.
I do so love a challenge... and diagonals are most definitely a challenge...
and you managed it brilliantly!
Thanks so much Moira Rae and Isabella for your nice comments! My first diagonal design! Worth the pain!!
So well done, Su. The repeat is super effective. I particularly love how this looks in the wallpaper view. Marvelous!
Great fun... love it!
Thanks for your lovely comment on these gaff-rigged skiff shapes Melanie, much appreciated. I was truly pleased with how well it printed too.
Love the waves and movement of your design with the bold shapes of the skiffs, really effective! Printed out lovely too! Beautful work!
Thanks Eloisa, Kelly and Angela for your lovely comments, much appreciated and very motivating!
Wonderful details and textures!
cool - I like the texture of your wavy lines!
Pretty cool! Very original!
Thanks for your lovely comment and your vote Mariska - much appreciated!
Hi Su, I am so in love with this design.
Good luck in the contest!- you have my vote :-)
Thanks so much Joan for your comment on the "illusion of movement and racing" - that's what you get when you tip each skiff at a small different angle - just as they are when you see them in the distance, tossed by waves...
Great accenting to give the illusion of movement and racing!
Swatch on basic combed cotton at a smaller scale (less than half) than currently showing for the Contest. Will probably resize the design to this smaller scale.

Thanks so much Tina, I really appreciate your lovely comments on this design and the collection!
Su this whole collection is spectacular! I love everything about this! The details are so beautiful and I love the repeat in the yard view too!
Thanks you all so much Susan, Deborah, Elena and Sylvie for your lovely comments. Susan you made me smile with the "rickrack trim" and pinwheel aspect taking you back to childhood (surely not that long ago? :)) and thanks very much Deborah for taking a look at it as wallpaper. I have to say that I still love the shape of these gaff-rigged boats.
Su, this is a lovely design. I like the story you tell about it too. :^D ~ Sylvie
Wonderful design, Su. I really like how you laid out the colors in this contest. Well done. And I like your description of "water-borne butterflies." I just looked at it in wallpaper and it looks beautiful.
Hi Su. A great design. Never mind the sailing aspect, which I appreciate and applaud, but the truth is that the colors are refreshing and it reminds me of a handheld pinwheel and rickrack trim, which make me think of being a kid again.
Thanks so much for your wonderful feedback (as always) Rhonda, it is just so helpful to me to know what appeals - and you are so good at getting a handle on that!
From the wavy watery texture beneath the hulls of the vibrant racing skiffs to the interesting layout of the design, this design is wonderful! Well done, Su!
And a big thank you to you Katherine!
