Inspired by David Hockney's "Paper Pools." His swimming-pool art is considered a sub-branch of Pop art.
Handmade paper has always fascinated me: the process and the finished product. I taught papermaking workshops to elementary and high school students.
A book in my personal library is David Hockney’s "Paper Pools" (Harry N. Abrams, Inc. 1980). David Hockney’s Swimming-pool art is considered a sub-branch of Pop art. Hockney created 29 Paper Pools by “painting†with colored paper pulp. These are large works of art. Panels averaged 6 feet x 7 feet. Some works are as big as fifteen feet long. He made his own moulds in which to pour the paper. Moulds were constructed from Polaroid photographs he took of the different scenes. He poured the different colored pulps into the moulds, then pressed the paper. If you have ever made handmade paper before then you know what a feat his "Paper Pools" is.
Hockney on water: : “. . . the point about water is you can look at it in so many different ways; it’s always different; you can choose what to look at, you can say, your eyes will stop here or there.â€

Well done! And, yes, chickens are funny.
Thanks, Cal. I am happy you enjoyed the design and the information. Chickens in anything adds humor, doesn't it? "Mona Lisa Chicken" Van Gogh's "The Postman" Stick a chicken where any other living being should be and it's funny! Again, thanks for taking a look at the design. I appreciate it.

Ha! Love this...clever spoof, so funny and well executed! Makes me laugh. This would look fantastic as art/upholstery/pillows/wallpaper, etc. in mid-century modern home decor!
Never have seen Hockney's pool series in the flesh....er....pulp. I'm sure they are beautiful. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you so much, Rhonda, for your comments. I thought this Spoonflower contest was a lot of fun. Thanks also for reading about Hockney. His work in handmade paper still amazes me -- I think it's because of the large scale! I always appreciate your looking at my designs, Rhonda. It makes my day.
I love the quirky humour of your design, Deborah! The chicken reclining in the banana chair and wearing the sunglasses is my favourite chirpy character! Thanks for sharing the interesting background information about David Hockney and the source of your inspiration!
Oh, so happy you saw my Chickens by a Paper Pool, Amy and Karen. Thanks so much for your comments. I do appreciate it. Thank you. You made my day. (We had an ice storm today (Apr 10 2013) and the Internet is iffy!)
You have done David Hockney proud, Deborah......so much fun and love the colors!!!!
OMG, I love the shadow. Really makes you feel like you are watching this guy on a hot summer's day. I love how you included the history of Hockney's swimming pool art. This is fabulous!
"Chickens by a Paper Pool a la David Hockney" printed on a swatch of Spoonflower cotton. Colors printed beautifully.

Thanks so much, Angela, for taking a look at the design and your comments. "Thinking outside of the coop" made me laugh. Thank you!
Wow! I love the way you have incorporated a chicken into this Pop Art theme. That is thinking outside of the coop for sure! Love it :)
