Description:

or Lions, lambs and leadership: "rather be a lamb led by a lion than a lion led by a lamb". Entry in the Lion-lamb contest. © Su Schaefer 2013 Lions, lambs and Easter lilies, or Lions, lambs and leadership.
Inspirations for this design were a mis-remembered saying: "rather be a lamb led by a lion than a lion led by a lamb" (actual saying below), and Easter lilies flowering in nearby gardens. My entry in Spoonflower's Lion-lamb contest.
© Su Schaefer 2013

The actual saying: "An army of lions led by a sheep is no match for an army of sheep led by a lion." Attributed to Winston Churchill, and cited in a book on leadership by Richard Luecke: Scuttle your ships before advancing: and other lessons from history on leadership and change, OUP, 1994.

While incubating the idea I looked at pictures of 'leadership' which generally show one person dominant or prominent (e.g. more brightly colored) in a group, with arrows pointing every which way... Not very inspiring. Then my local newspaper reported results of a trial evacuation from the Harbour Tunnel which observed (from video & interviews) that in an emergency few like to lead (94% said their movements were influenced by others; full report here). That did it, I made up my mind and led with lions AND lambs leading!

su_g says: This is what Noel quilted using my 'Lions, lambs and easter lilies' design for the center of a centerpiece. A very talented quilter: I love the puffy organic feeling given to this fabric composition through the quilting. I don't want to say too much more and possibly spoil the surprise for someone... Thank you so much Noel for letting me share your composition, quilting, and nice picture too.

su_g says: Thanks so much Janiece - and that quote about March was the original inspiration! Then I got a bit side-tracked on the leadership thing...

whimzwh...

whimzwhirled says: This is gorgeous." And the lion shall lie down with the lamb' is a biblically inspired quote about a time when all creatures will live side by side in peace. Not an actual bible quote. I have also always heard in in relationship to the month of March which is said come in as a lion and leave as a lamb. Very pretty design. A great inspirational design.

su_g says: Thank you so very much Melanie, Katarina, Karen, Deborah, Sigrid. Cal and Karen (again - you really do like it! Time to get out those paints??) I really appreciate all the wonderful feedback, and extra interpretation on what works in this design... others always see more than I do... and I see I got my left & right round the wrong way when I added the detail views - it is the moth-eaten look of the lion on the LEFT I like! Thanks again everyone!
