Rhinos and waterholes, design inspired by the textiles and wood carvings of the multi-ethnic Kuba peoples of Zaire. © Su Schaefer 2013
Rhinos and waterholes. Design inspired by the turn of the 19th century raffia textiles and wood carvings of the multi-ethnic Kuba peoples of Zaire in equatorial Africa. 49th out of 296 entries (with 143 votes) in the African-inspired Contest: thanks to all who voted!

The Kuba have been described as "a people who cannot bear to leave a surface without ornament" (Wikipedia). Textile conservator Ann E. Svenson describes Kuba textiles as "simultaneously bold and intricate, dramatic and subdued, irregular and ordered, as well as asymmetrical and balanced. In all cases they are fluid, visually engaging and full of surprises".

Susan thanks so much for having a look at the whole collection and picking this one out for a comment: it is one of my all-time faves! So happy to read how much you like it too! (I was happy it did so well in that contest as there were an awful lot of fantastic entries!)

Saw this via your rain boots link. I LOVE this. This is the kind of thing I am a complete sucker for. Awesome. How can that be in 49th place?? 1st place!!
Thanks so much for your generous comment Amy - very glad you've seen it now!!

Wowza!!! This is so gorgeous, I can't believe I haven't seen this before!
Thank you so much Lisa! I'm so glad that this design and the Kuba appeal to you too! I had to smile at your linking that wonderful description of them as "a people who cannot bear to leave a surface without ornament" to the Spoonflower community: so true! I have found more excellent ideas of fun and decorative ways to use fabric here than anywhere else.

After reading your comments, the Kuba are now my new favorite group of people (who "cannot bear to leave a surface without ornament"); but that might also describe the Spoonflower community! This fabric is now my new favorite African - inspired fabric, I love how the background texture shines through in the lighter spaces of the design, and it certainly adds great dimension to the rhinos! Just wonderful!
Swatch printed on basic combed cotton (part design only, at a slightly larger scale than currently showing, scale can be changed, please message me any preference).

Thanks so much Yvonne and Shirley, and I love the idea of a top fifty! Yes! The competition was extremely tough - I was very happy to come 49th out of 296 entries and to receive 143 votes: thanks to all who voted!
Congratulations top 50! My new category. :-) There was some extremely tough competition wouldn't you say?
Beautiful composition, colors, and textures!
Thanks Karen, Pat and Kathlyn for your wonderful comments and feedback - that "Kewl" made me laugh too, thanks for that!
I love this design, the colors and the collection.
Su....LOVE the texture...so bold! Good luck in the contest!
Thanks Sharon and Julie for the nice feedback - much appreciated and very motivating!
The rhinos look wonderful Su, I love the texture in your bold design!
very cool! xxx
Thank you all Katarina, Tina, Sheila and Joan for your great feedback and comments. I've just added this wonderful description: Textile conservator Ann E. Svenson describes Kuba textiles as "... simultaneously bold and intricate, dramatic and subdued, irregular and ordered, as well as asymmetrical and balanced. In all cases they are fluid, visually engaging and full of surprises", a description I strongly relate to!
Fabulous balance of boldness and colors............really evokes an African feel.
Su these are all WOW! the white pops, the blue pops, retro, and modern at the same time. The texture....I love the play of the circles, small, large... the bulls eye in disguise. Really amazing Su :)
Oh Sylvie - so true about the Rhinos (sadly, angrily!). I've spent hours watching them in the Western Plains Zoo and they are the most dainty movers, so light on their feet, like dancers, and despite the fact that all the keepers are very respectful of them (unpredictable) they are just defenseless in the wild against poachers.
What a great collection! I love the earthy palette and the textures! And the rhinos are great!
Gorgeous, love the textures and that retro appeal:)
How wonderful to wake up to your lovely comments and feedback Rhonda, Victoria, Janiece, Sue Ellen, Melanie (from NZ... hi neighbour!), and Deborah. MUCH appreciated. Rhonda I think you put your finger on it (again!) - thanks so much for that.
Su I agree with the others.. WOW :^D I'm glad you chose Rhino's, they need the publicity because they are being poached for their horns, so sad... But here you make people notice them! It's a really beautiful collection! :^D ~ sylvie
Love the linen look of this design. It's beautiful.
Wow! Love the textures and colours, fabulous design!
I love this collection! You've outdone yourself, Su!
Great design and collection. Love the color choices as well.
The stylised rhino shapes meld perfectly with the terrific, curvy, geometric background, Su! Your choice of colours has a wonderful earthiness, with just a touch of sky to brighten the palette!
Thanks so much Elizabeth, Angela, Shirley, Susan and Virginie, for your lovely and helpful comments. I have no idea why I like this so much - as it feels like it breaks all the 'rules' - but I do... and your comments suggest there is a good reason for that...
Woow, it's a fantastic design ! Very nice textures and colors !
Su, this is very cool. Your colors are perfect, and linen texture makes the design sing.
Inspired pattern making. I like them all
Su, you have done a fantastic job on this whole collection!
