Hey, and it looks like that spazzy baby is enjoying looking at the fabric, too! Quite excited by the sight. Very discerning child.
What a beautiful drawing! Cean, your imagination is fantastic! A total delight. I'm new here at Spoonflower, and your work grabbed me the very first day.
With this one, the flow of Nanny's dress, the smoke borders emitting from her stovepipe hat, the darling kids, the boy's expression... wonderful! So clever and beautifully executed. I predict that if you do write an illustrated story about this character, it will be a big hit.
Well keep those cogs working! We are nothing without our cogs after all... some of us more than others as Nanny Toggleswitch can surely attest to.

I need to check out the illustrations from those two, I don't remember the pictures though I love the stories. And thank you for the amazing compliment of waking with the nanny in your head. (she'll dust those morning cobwebs away for sure!) As for a future story, who knows? The niche market of macabre, lightly sinister victorian heroines is available since Edward Gorey died. (A personal favorite of mine). Thank you both for your super ideas and comments. you've got my cogs working.....
Oh - and for some reason, this totally reminds me of Frances Hodgson Burnett's (spelling?) illustrations for "The Little Princess" and "The Secret Garden" but with a slightly more sinister angle to it. LOVE IT! (Those were my favorite books as a little girl incidentally)
I absolutely LOVE the creepiness about her. I mean, I believe that she is a fabulous nanny and the children probably depend on her and even love her in some way... but there is something a little distasteful there and it makes me want to know "the rest of the story". :) I'm embarrassed to say that I actually woke up this morning thinking about this picture - that is what an impression it made on me! You should really write a "children's" book that may be more geared towards the childish adult. :)
I think the children are funny, too. The girl looks quite unconcerned; but the boy looks like he might be wondering if "Nanny" is about to "blow her stack". Or perhaps she just has a slightly too tight grip on his hand.
Thanks, Lulakiti! I made the nanny up for the steampunk contest (sci-fy/ victorian), and though she ended up slightly creepier than I anticipated I kind of dig that about her. She looks quite formidable!
This is absolutely amazing - what contest was this for? Did you just make this character up or does she come from a story (existing or that you made up)?
Here is a baby blanket made with Nanny Toggleswitch and a spazzy baby.

Cute fabric... I love your designs and illustrations! *Smiles*
Awesome! And freaky!
You are the best! Thanks so much for your vote of confidence. I'll go write my Pointless Imaginary Contest acceptance speech right now!
Cean - I guess I'm strange - I never get the results of these contests! The winner was great, but I LOVED your Nanny! So I hereby give you my Personal First place, Pointless Imaginary contest award!
thanks so much!
Hope you won! She's really cute - It was the only art that was representative of steampunk to me! Keep up the great work.
